It’s not all rivers of maple syrup, but the state of Vermont has a sweet deal for remote workers.
The state legislature recently passed the New Remote Worker Program, which will pay people who relocate to Vermont up to $10,000.
According the the legislation, full-time employees of businesses based outside Vermont who become full-time residents on or after January 1, 2019 may be eligible to receive compensation for “qualifying remote work expenses.” These include:
- Relocation to Vermont
- Computer software and hardware
- Broadband access or upgrade
- Membership in a co-working or similar space
Before you start scouring Zillow for log cabins, you should know there’s a limit of $5,000 per year and a maximum of $10,000 per person. The money will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. The grants cannot exceed $125,000 in 2019, so act fast if you want to be part of the first 25. The amount doubles in 2020.
The program will require candidates to go through a process that certifies them as new remote workers and verifies qualified expenses. The legislation officially goes into effect July 1.
